Board/Foundation Minutes August 2023

Sidney Public Library Board
August 15, 2023

Board Members Present: Steven Dewitt, Jane Holechek, Shannon Smelley, Tanya Lewis and Jen Ramsey

Meeting called to order at: 4:01 pm.

  • Kindergarten Library Card sign up starts 9/1/2023
  • Chair donated by Friends to the Night of Hope fundraiser brought $75.00
  • Friends Adult Spelling Bee is 8/21/2023 1:00pm at the Cheyenne County Community Center $5.00 entry fee. Two categories: Ages 40-60, Age 60 +. Prizes for first, second and third place.

Approval of Minutes:  A motion was made by Shannon to approve the minutes of the July 10, 2023 meeting.  The motion was seconded by Steven.
 APPROVED: ALL

Financial Reports and Bills:  A motion was made by Tanya to approve the bills for July 2023.  The motion was seconded by Jen. 
 APPROVED: ALL

Old Business:

  • Employee Job Descriptions.  Monthly work schedule and payroll tasks will be shifted from Technical Services Librarian to Library Director to align with other City Departments.
  • Grievance Policy and Procedure: Discussed further. Amanda will draft a policy and procedure based on information presented during this meeting, and information discussed in this meeting.

New Business:

  • Backpack Giveaway at Verizon on 8/5/2023. Becca and Amanda took the Bookmobile.  22 people visited the bookmobile that day.
  • Communication workshop with The Align Team was held yesterday at Security First Bank.  A lot was discussed and learned.  A summary will be provided to the library staff by The Align Team.
  • Stephanie Mika has stepped down as appointed secretary for the library board meetings. For the time being, the Library Director will take meeting notes.
  • Amanda is enrolled in the MLIS program at Wayne State University. Classes begin 8/28/2023
  • Bookmobile route, Friday Friends, and Free Speech Teen Group will start again after Labor Day.
  • The Bookmobile is scheduled for service at Sauder’s Automotive 8/29/2023. This is regular maintenance that is done twice per year.
  • There is some interest in investing in a new bookmobile. Those involved would like to see a fundraising campaign by the Library, Library Board, and the Friends of the Sidney Public Library that involves the community.
  • Building improvements: thermostat near the director’s office is being replaced due to a malfunction. Work is being done by Day & Night Plumbing and Heating. Tile replacement has begun in the women’s restroom. Work being done by Flooring Garage.  An agreement was reach with the City Office to pave the parking area behind the library.  It will be paved with 6 inches of concrete.
  • A motion was made to go into closed session at 4:37pm.
    Ended closed Session at 5:11pm.

  • Addition of Library Director, Amanda Eastin as Authorized Agent to credit card was rejected by the Credit Card Company. More research will be done on why and what options are available.

*Grandparent Storytime*

Grandparents – you are invited to Toddler Tales with your special 2 or 3 year old, September 13 at 10:00 or Storytime at 11:00 with your special 4 or 5 year old. Both sessions will feature story and related fingerplays. Bring a sack lunch and we will have a picnic on the patio after both sessions, plus a craft that you and your grandchild can do together. Hope to see you there!

*Together is Fun*

No sitting around! Come join “Together is Fun” beginning Tuesday, September 12 at 4:00. This program welcomes youth kindergarten through 6th to enjoy a time of fellowship and fun through game or craft activity. Our programs are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. So don’t miss out – join the fun!

*Storytime and Toddler Tales*

The fall story session will begin Wednesday, September 13 for children ages 2 through 5. Toddler Tales welcomes children ages 2 and 3 and begins at 10:00, followed by Storytime at 11:00 for children ages 4 and 5. Both sessions feature story-related fingerplays and a take home activity. Join us each Wednesday for fun and fellowship! Don’t miss out!

Summer Reading

Summer Reading is winding down, however we have one more week of activities to offer!

Tuesday, July 11 – “Lunch at Friendship Park” – 12:00 – Bring a sack lunch and listen and or participate in stories – All Ages

Wednesday, July12 – “Toddler Friends” – 10:30 – Story and related fingerplays and take home activity – Ages 2 & 3 – “Let Your Kindness Shine” – 2:00 – Participants will make cards, banners etc. for community workers, nursing home residents and others – All Ages

Thursday, July 13 – “Music Makers” – 1030 – Participants will make kazoos and jingle sticks – PS – 3rd grade – “Giving to Others” – 2:00 – Participants will help make a no – sew blanket to be donated to the CASA organization – 4th – 6th grade. (This program is a continuation – we have supplies to finish another blanket for CASA.)

It’s StoryWalk Week!

Monday, June 26 through Saturday, July 1 – “The StoryWalk (R) Project” at Legion Park. The StoryWalk (R) Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk (R) is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson. This program will set up a story on platforms throughout Legion Park in which participants can enjoy the outdoors and enjoy a book by going from platform to platform. (This program will run from Monday, June 26 through 5:00 Saturday, July 1 beginning at the Shelter House in Legion Park. For the entire family, enjoy at your leisure.)

Thursday, June 29 – “Library Field Day” – 2:00 – Participants will play hula Hoop Hustle, Mummy Wrap, Balloon Volleyball, etc. – All Ages

Wednesday, June 21 – “Toddler Friends” – 10:30 – Story and related fingerplays and take home activity – Ages 2 & 3 (Re-scheduled date for Chalk Around the Block with Kindness – 11:15)“Let Your Kindness Shine” – 2:00 – Participants will make cards of appreciation, banners, etc. for community workers, nursing home residents and others – All Ages.

Thursday, June 22 – “MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD” – WITH DAVID MARSH – 10:30 – David Marsh will present and play a variety of instruments from around the world – All Ages. “Giving to Others” – 2:00 – Participants will help make a no-sew blanket(s) to be donated to the CASA organization – 4th – 6th Grade.

Thursday, June 15 – “Chalk Around the Block with Kindness” – 10:30 – Using chalk to write positive or kind words on the sidewalks around the library and city offices – All Ages – (Alternate date – June 21)

Summer Reading 2023 begins Saturday, June 3

SATURDAY, JUNE 3 – “ALL TOGETHER NOW” BEGINS – FUN DAY begins at 9:00 through 11:00. Sign up also, for the “Pen Pals” program. The Chadron Public Library and the Sidney Public Library will be working together to promote a Pen Pals program. Children with similar interests will be paired together in hopes that through writing, life-long friendships will develop. The Teen and Adult reading programs also begin Saturday, June 3. (Sign up for the reading program and the Pen Pals will be through June if you are unable to attend.)

TUESDAY, JUNE 6“Letter Writing Station” – 10:30 – Instructions on how to write a letter – part of the Pen Pals program.
